TruthQuest History

TruthQuest History  by Michelle Miller
One look at TruthQuest History and you'll never see the study of history the same again! Homeschool mom and author, Michelle Miller has challenged both the parent and student(s) to view history in a brand new way -- not just the story of mankind, but the story of the One who made mankind! Her literature-based guides through history are deep and meaty, yet surprisingly easy to understand and to use.  These are great for families that prefer to use living books to study history - really with these guides, some map work and a timeline, your children will get an excellent education in history, while building a Christian worldview.

There are a total of ten guides available -- enough to give a thorough study of American and World History for your child from Kindergarten through graduation! First, I'd like to point out how all of these guides are organized. Each guide has an introductory Notes for Mom section that briefly explains how to use this style of teaching. Then, the main text of the guide uses embolden type to highlight the commentary which will bring to life the most important God-revealing principles of history, human worth, government, etc. This commentary is part of what makes TruthQuest History unique from other literature-based curriculums. For those of us who didn't grow up with a Biblical worldview, but who desparately want our children to have one, Michelle gets us thinking. She teaches our children AND us as we discuss the many points she so clearly brings out. The main section of each guide also includes an extensive reading list specific for each topic and though-provoking ThinkWrite exercises strategically placed through the volumes provide a place for our children to process what they've been learning and put their thoughts on paper. The final section of the book is the appendix, which provides a summary of the main points as they relate to the ThinkWrite assignments -- a very helpful tool for mom.

On the surface these guides may seem to be nothing more than a glorified reading list - but they are so much more! For example the Ancient Rome Guide has much more challenging ThinkWrite aassignments - which is natural as it is most suited for upper elementary through high school. If you have children in multiple grades, you can definitely use this guide with younger students using more discussion of the ideas and forgoing or adjusting the writing assignments.

I have used the American History for Young Students Volumes 1 - 3 with my children and can tell you that they "live" the books we read through their playing! I elected to use a timeline notebook and some outline maps found online to supplement our study. The guide is so easy to use, I read the commentary aloud then we spend time reading from some of the wonderful books Michelle recommends or others that I found at the library. No textbooks, tests or tears!

What about lesson plans? There are none because the author feels that there is "no one-size-fits-all-plan for God's children. He has made each one uniquely, and has a unique plan for their lives….". She doesn't know what that plan is for your family, so what right does she have to schedule your day?! Of course, she does recommend that you have a general plan of what you want to cover.. In her Notes for Mom section, Michelle encourages you to be assertive - feeling free to skip topics, add activities or assignments - whatever best fits YOUR family and educational philosphy. One word of caution, as I've mentioned, these guides have LOTS of books listed to give you as many choices as possible. Guard against the temptation to purchase every book listed or feeling like you can't study a topic if your library doesn't have the books recommended! Pick and choose the books you will use and leave the rest -- without any guilt!

Sounding Forth the Trumpet for Children
The final book in this series tells the dramatic story of our nation's struggle with slavery and human rights in the pre-Civil War years.  These were the days of John Quincy Adams and William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Tubman and harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln and Dred Scott - figures who were used by God to change the course of history.  Young readers ages nine to thirteen will learn about the events that led up to the Civil War, including the Mexican War, the Gold Rush, and the skirmishes of Bleeding Kansas.  As in the other titles, study questions for each chapter and a glossary of terms are included.

Guerber History Series revised and republished by Christine Miller

Helene A. Guerber wrote histories for grammar school children in the 19th century. Published in 1896 by the American Book Company, 'Guerber's Historical Readers in the Eclectic Readings Series' were used to introduce children to the histories of the ancient and classical world. These engaging narratives are richly detailed accounts of the lives and times of the most important people of the period, arranged chronologically. The people are placed within the context of their times, and their history is presented with interesting background information so that the entire narrative flows as a single, unbroken story. In an effort to preserve the work of Guerber, publisher Christine Miller has been true to the original texts whenever possible. With the exception of a few updates, each book in the series is faithfully reprinted as it was published in 1896. Where changes were necessary, the publisher carefully explains the reasons for any deviation from the original text. As with most books written prior to the 20th century, use of these texts enables children to build a biblical worldview and a rich vocabulary.  Dates are given in the narrative where they are known; the pronunciation of place and personal names is carefully marked at its first encounter in the text; and illustrations abound. The text includes maps, a comprehensive timeline of all the persons and events encountered in the history, and a complete bibliography and index round out the book.
As you explore the titles in this series, you will quickly see that these are not your ordinary "textbooks". There are no lesson plans, comprehension questions or fill-in-the-blank worksheets. Instead you are free to use the books as an exciting narrative of history, stopping whenever you desire for discussion or digging deeper with books from the library. The rich vocabulary gives plenty of opportunities for dictionary work and for using context to find the meaning of words. The reading list provided with each book is keyed to the chapters, so one can easily find more "living books" to cover each time period. Those implementing the teaching methods of Charlotte Mason or the Classical model, will appreciate the short paragraphs, which are perfect for copywork and dictation exercises. Use of a wall or notebook timeline would also help to make the people and events covered come to life, as your child is able to see the "big picture". As the author states in her preface, these books may be used as your main textbook, or as a supplement to any history curriculum.
