The Draw to Learn series created by the Notgrass family provides a great way for children, preschool through teen, to integrate Bible study and art. There are four books in the series, “The Book of Proverbs,” “The Life of Jesus,” “The Book of Psalms,” and “The Book of Acts.” Each spiral-bound volume in the series has 150 lessons. At the top of each 8 ½ x 11” page there is a short summary sentence and the scripture reference for the lesson. The passage is usually only a few verses, making each book an incremental study. The rest of the page is a large frame with plenty of room for the student to draw their illustration. Under the drawing area, the author directs the child to read the passage, and then gives suggestions for creating a picture to illustrate what they have just read. They are also encouraged to think and apply the lesson to their life. For instance, in Lesson 63 of “The Life of Jesus” the student will read Matthew 13:44 and follow directions to draw a treasure chest filled with objects that are valuable to them. They are also encouraged to “thank God for the treasure of the kingdom of heaven.”
I really like the Draw to Learn series! Each child’s personality can really come through as they complete their study. Young children will need someone else to read the lesson to them, but they can still create their own masterpiece in the drawing area. Older children can work independently, or you might consider working through a volume together as a family (the books are not reproducible, so each family member will need their own). Illustrations can be as basic or elaborate as you desire – the author encourages you not to rush your child as they create. As a sentimental mom, another benefit of the Draw to Learn series is the unique keepsake each child creates that will bring back sweet memories of our homeschool years!
