Multiplication got you down?  Why not try a story?!  No, I'm not referring to the dreaded word or "story" problems we're all familiar with, but rather a neat program called Times Tales.

(We are pleased to offer this resource in our catalog!)

As a homeschool mom, the study of logic has always seemed out of reach to me.  I simply could not imagine trying to help my children navigate a subject which I couldn't grasp myself.  Thankfully, two homeschool graduates, Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn, have done families everywhere a great service by writing The Fallacy Detective, which introduces young adults to the study of logic in an easy-to-understand, non-intimidating format!

Safari Search --Animal Classification System
Creator/Publisher: Blue Wave Learning Company
For more information or to order: www.bluewavelearning.com

Safari Search is a product of the Blue Wave Learning Company. It gives children a very basic introduction to classifying animals and could be used in conjunction with an elementary study of animals. Rather than traditional (boring) drill work, Safari Search accomplishes the same goal as drilling, but with the 'feel' of a game, which serves to engage children in the learning process.

Curriculum Workshop - A Guide to Writing Homeschool Curriculum
Author: Alice Pauquette
Publisher: Excellent Quests
For more information or to order:

Have you ever read a homeschool book or magazine in which the author shares how they use very little "pre-packaged" curriculum, preferring to create their own customized program?  If you're like me, those books/articles are interesting and even inspiring, but they can leave you feeling that, while it may work for THEM, you wouldn't know where to start and can't even picture yourself writing your own curriculum for one child, let alone three, four or more!

Math: Algebra
Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1& 2
Authors: Greg Sabouri and Shawn Sabouri
For more information or to order: www.teachingtextbooks.com

As many of you know from reading previous reviews - I am "math challenged" and not ashamed to admit that I need help when it comes to teaching my sons anything more than basic operations!  After having the opportunity to review several Algebra programs, I decided that this is the one I'll be using next year when my son is ready for higher math.  Why Teaching Textbooks?  First, the textbooks were written specifically for homeschool students.  The lessons are clearly written, directly to the student, which encourages independence and understanding.  Throughout the lessons, key points are highlighted, allowing the student to quickly go back and review concepts.

MATH-A-LOGIC
Author: Dianne Draze
Publisher: Prufrock Press
For more information or to order: www.prufrock.com

Math-a-Logic is a softbound book that provides 72 lessons, covering 8 topics in Logic. The program targets students in grades 4-8. Each of the 76 pages is its own lesson with a short, but sufficient explanation of the topic as well as problems to work. Each lesson requires very little if any prep time. The pages have a nice layout that should appeal to, rather than overwhelm, the student. The pages are reproducible for use within a family.

Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends
Authors:  Sarah, Shephen, & Grace Molly
For more information or to order: www.homeschoolingfromtheheart.com

Just the title alone will make a mom want to peek into the pages of this delightful and helpful book!  Rather than emphasizing the "minimum" of at least getting along, Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends aims for something so much higher -- truly deciding to treat one another as best friends.  Written by three homeschooled siblings, Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends is filled with stories from their own family experiences.  Rather than looking through family life with rose-colored glasses, the authors treat the everyday "irritations" and challenges of living with others from a VERY realistic perspective and challenge readers to look at those struggles we have as opportunities to allow God to grow us.

The Write Stuff Adventure: Exploring the Art of Writing
Author: Dean Rea
Publisher: Great Expectations Book Company
For more information or to order: www.gebconline.com

Let's face it - for most homeschool families, teaching the art of writing is sometimes a bit of a challenge.  I have found it is useful to have a variety of "tools" on my shelf that I can refer to as my children progress developmentally and need additional instruction or reinforcement in the area of composition.  The Write Stuff Adventure is just that type of tool.  Though it can be used as your writing curriculum, I feel it is best used as a source of great ideas and encouragement for writers of various ages and abilities.
