Handy English Encoder Decoder by Bluedorn
If you're working with words, whether in reading or spelling, it doesn't take long to realize that the English language is full of rules - and rule breakers.  Harvey Bluedorn has taken some of the "mystery" out of our language by compiling the Handy English Encoder Decoder - All the Spelling and Phonics Rules You Could Ever Want to Know.

Designed to enhance (not replace) your spelling and phonics program, the Handy English Encoder Decoder cracks the "code" of our language and arranges the rules in an easy to access, brief, and orderly format.  The book is divided into two sections.  The first, the Encoder, covers more than 60 spelling rules and their exceptions and also includes a list of commonly confused spellings and word pairs.  The second section, the Decoder, lists over 200 phonics rules listed in alphabetical order for quick reference.  Also included in this section are the rules for dividing words into syllables.  The Handy English Encoder Decoder also includes an appendix listing some suggested spelling and phonics games, as well as an exhaustive list of homophones (words which are pronounced the same but spelled differently).

The Handy English Encoder Decoder is one of those books you will find yourself referring to again and again.  Adults and children will both benefit from having this incredibly comprehensive and indeed, "handy" resource at their fingertips!

Apples Daily SpellingApples Daily Spelling Drills for Secondary Students

Apples is designed for the older student (junior high or high school) who struggles with spelling. Have you ever felt like taking your older student back to the beginning with phonics - but hesitate to do so because the available phonics books are so elementary? All you need is some simple (but not elementary), daily phonics drills that go over again and again the basic phonics rules. That is exactly what Apples does. Your older student simply goes over one Apple each day, and it will help keep his spelling woes away! It takes less than ten minutes daily. Use it in conjunction with your current language arts program. Consumable.

Truly a unique program! Rather than giving the student lists of words to memorize, it uses spelling rules and application to improve comprehension. Spelling rules are presented as "clues," and each day the student reviews the rule, eventually committing it to memory by filling in keywords left blank at the top of each page. They also apply the rule with a variety of activities, completing one page each day. There are no spelling lists, no spelling tests. Every tenth lesson is a review of the rules studied to that point. Emphasis is placed on words that follow the rules - the rule breakers are taught separately.

Apples spelling lessons are short - only taking about 10 minutes each day. It is not designed to look childish and does not contain pictures or fancy graphics. This really is an ideal program for middle or high school students who struggle with spelling. Apples 2 is also available, and provides a second year of study. Once these two books are completed, I believe that even a "poor" speller will have improved and be more confident in their ability to spell words correctly.

Sequential Spelling
This unique and well-written program reinforces phonics, utlizes student self-correction, builds from easier words of a word family to important power words that build self-confidence, and best of all - kids do not have to copy words, write them in sentences, etc. If your children are just beginning their spelling journey or if they have struggled with spelling and/or reading, this program just might be for you!
The author recommends that all students start at Level 1, however, there are instructions for moving older students along more quickly so that you are able to cover more than one Level per year if you desire. They also offer special pricing on purchasing all 7 levels so you can move students along more quickly.
Each level contains 180 lessons. The student response book is not required, but it is highly recommended. The response book is the same, no matter which level you are using.
Sequential Spelling does require teacher involvement, about 20 - 30 minutes per day. It is the most efficient and affordable program I have found!

Why buy Sequential Spelling Complete Levels 1- 7?

1. You save $$ over purchasing each level separately.
2. I have found with my older student that we can work through more than one level at a time. Allowing us to "catch up" to where he needs to be.
3. Each volume has increasingly more challenging word patterns. When I notice my son consistently misspelling a word, I can look through the levels and find the 8 - 10 lesssons that focus on that pattern. We can then take a break from where we are and spend a couple of weeks working on that pattern, then go back to where we left off in our current level.
