Technology

This is a new area for us - our son has been interested in computer graphics, animation and video game development for a few years. I have done lots of self-study in order to help him follow his interests, while protecting him from the dangers of too much technology and those who use it for evil. You can read a bit more about our journey on my blog. I hope to add other titles soon and my son is working on an ebook for kids ages 10 and up, which will have lots of tips and resources for those interested in computer arts.

Awesome 3D Game Development: No Programming Required with CDROM
We recommend this for teens or adults. Awesome 3D Game Development teaches aspiring game developers how to create their own computer games without programming skills and provides an in-depth understanding of how the game design process works. Using hands-on tutorials and ?drag-and-drop game engines, readers learn to make and modify their own interactive 3D computer games, create models, and select game assets. The CD-ROM has most of the demos of the development tools used in the book, including 3D GameMaker, Reality Factory, Multimedia Fusion, MilkShape 3D Modeler, and Paint Shop Pro. This is a great way to learn the fundamentals of game design and game creation - no programming skills required!

A word of warning regarding technology and specifically the field of computer graphics, animation, game design, etc. - be aware that your teen may run across their fair share of evil looking characters and worlds that others have created.  We found 3D Game Development to be acceptable, with no illustrations of immodestly dressed women and only one or two illustrations of "bad guy" type monsters, which were not of the hideous nature sometimes found in games.
