Woodshop 101 for Kids was written by a homeschool dad and woodworking enthusiast. This well-organized book begins with the basics – types of wood and lessons in handling woodworking tools. Only after this careful introduction does the author provide instructions for 14 woodworking projects. Woodshop 101 for Kids is available to purchase in a comb-bound printed version or a downloadable ebook.
Right from the start I was impressed with how user-friendly Woodshop 101 is for experienced and novice woodworkers. What impressed me the most is the volume of pictures and illustrations. I also love the fact that, unlike most books that teach woodworking, Woodshop 101 for Kids is based solely on using hand tools! This not only makes the projects more “do-able” for young children, but reduces the cost of buying tools.
There are 21 lessons in all; you can use the book as a semester course by completing one lesson per week or just work at your own pace. More than just a set of instructions for building various projects, Craig has done a great job of incorporating math skills, foundational lessons on tools and safety. Did I mention the pictures?! Nearly every page has at least one picture, often featuring the author’s kids completing the tasks as outlined in the lessons. This is truly a basic woodworking course and assumes no prior knowledge.
Let’s talk about some of the lessons and 14 projects you and your child will complete as you progress through Woodshop 101 for Kids. The first several lessons teach the proper use and safe handling of various tools. As you learn how to handle each tool, your child will be given specific activities for practicing with the tool until they are comfortable with it. Several of the lessons on tools also include a project for the child to complete. As you progress through the book, the projects get more challenging. Projects include: Peg Game, Birdhouse, Toolbox/Art Caddy, Battleship, Step Stool, Marshmallow Catapult, and a Planter Box. (A complete list of projects is available on the author’s website.)
In summary, Woodshop 101 for Kids is a well-written, easy to use woodworking course that is perfect for homeschool families. Many dads express their desire to be more involved in the actual instruction in their homeschool - Woodshop 101 gives them a great opportunity. If you have a child who is even remotely interested in woodworking or making things with their hands, THIS is the book for you!
